Ride Shakedown contests new on the 5 Star level for 14-15 season

Scuol, Switzerland – October 22nd 2013
With more than 250 contests in six categories (1 Star – 6 Star), three disciplines (Slopestyle, Halfpipe, Big Air) held all over the world, the World Snowboard Tour is living up to its name. With the 5 biggest Snowboard contests in the world making up the 6 Star tour calendar, we are proud to present our 12th season of the biggest and best snowboarding events in the world.

On the 5 Star level, US Snowboarding Grand Prix Northstar-at-Tahoe from January 6th-12th has been newly added, as well as the Snowboard Jamboree in Stoneham, Canada from 16th -19th January. The 5 Star level this season counts eight events on four continents.

The 2013-2014 6 Star Calendar counts the following stops:

EVENT DATE DISCIPLINE
X Games Tignes 2013 TOOK PLACE SS, HP
Air&Style Beijing 5-7 December 2013 BA
Burton European Open by Mini Laax 13-19 January 2014 SS, HP
X Games Aspen, CO 23-26 January 2014 SS, HP
Burton US Open by Mini Vail, CO 03-08 March 2014 SS, HP

The 6 Star schedule for the men continues with the prestigious Big Air contest Air&Style in the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing. The year 2013 will wrap up with the 5 Star US Snowboarding Grand Prix in Copper from 16th -22nd December, which will be yet another chance for riders to earn World Snowboard Tour points as well as points for Olympic qualification.

Jeremy Forster, U.S. Snowboarding: “We are stoked, in this Olympic season, to continue our partnership with the World Snowboard Tour through our Grand Prix and Revolution Tour events. Co-sanctioning was well received last season, and we’re looking forward to another successful year working together”

2014 will be kicked off with the US Snowboarding Grand Prix in Northstar at Tahoe, CA, a US Olympic team selection event. From here, we’ll be moving to Europe for the classic 6 Star Burton European Open presented by MINI in Laax, Switzerland. This will be the last relevant contest in Europe before the Olympic Games and for a fair number of riders it provides the last chance to qualify for Sochi.

January will come to a close with the X Games in Aspen, and we are proud that this event continues to be part of the Tour. Tim Reed, ESPN:”The rider feedback related to X Games being part of the World Snowboard Tour was very positive, so we look forward to continuing the relationship and once again hosting the top ranked snowboarders in Aspen.”

From February 6th-12th, it is time for the freestyle disciplines to take the grand stage at the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. It will be the first time, Slopestyle is showcased and TTR is proud to see the sport that we nurtured and helped develop, will receive the attention from the broadest global audience possible. After the Olympics, there will be a short break from competing before our final 6 Star event takes place. The Tour finale will be hosted in Vail, Colorado at the Burton US Open Halfpipe and Slopestyle event. On both final days of the event, the World Snowboard Tour champions will be crowned in the categories Slopestyle, Halfpipe, Big Air men and Overall.

Counting towards the 14-15 season, the Big Air Ride Shakedown contests will be another new 5 Star addition to the Tour in 2014. On 21st-22nd March riders are welcomed in Mount Snow, and from 4th-5th April the classic contest is held in Quebec, Canada, at Mont Saint Sauveur resort.

The 4 Star level currently presents fifteen events spread over three continents, with even more to come. On this level, the tour has never seen a stronger collection of events, spread all over the world and in all disciplines. The 1-3 Star category, serviced by the World Snowboard Federation, presents rookie-level events all over the world. Our complete calendar can be found on:

Fabia Grüebler, Global Tour Director: “We are currently experiencing, that the relevance of the Tour for single events has never been greater. When we look at examples like X Games continuing our relationship and the long-standing Ride Shakedown contest deciding to join our tour, we see a lot of opportunity to further advance the best tour structure in freestyle snowboarding. We are sad to see some classic contests taking a break this season. But we are confident, that the foundation we laid together with all events in past and present, will suffice, to present the best competitive snowboarding has to offer in many years to come.’’
Reto Lamm, President of TTR Pro Snowboarding: “For the 12th consecutive season we are proud to present a calendar, that represents TTR Pro Snowboarding´s push towards a unified environment in competitive snowboarding, yet remains true to the core values of the sport. An Olympic season has always presented a busy schedule for riders, but we have been working hard to build a calendar that takes this into account while maintaining a strong and solid foundation for the tour. Presenting the highest quality of snowboarding events on every level remains our highest priority and we feel with this calendar we have succeeded.’’
